Surfing + Exploring El Salvador

We visited El Salvador 2x in one year because we loved it so much! Perfect waves, easy flight from NY and great weather. Our trips included mostly surfing and beach time. El Salvador is by no means a "safe" country, BUT we did not feel in danger, or threatened either time we were there. The locals are welcoming and very nice. Stay away from San Salvador and head to the coast!

Mizata Point Resort

Mizata Point Resort, CA 2E, Mizata, El Salvador

Quiet and quaint hotel on the beach, in front o the Mizata Point break. The rooms were clean, with a balcony facing the ocean. The staff were very nice and the food was fresh and good. There is nothing really around to do besides surf :)

El Tunco

Playa El Tunco, La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Great beach town 45 minutes from the San Salvador airport. There are a ton of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops here. There are a few great surf breaks walking distance from here: Sunzal, La Bocana, La Bocanita. The Punta Roca surf break is about a 10 min drive from here.

Roca Sunzal Hotel in El Tunco

Hotel Roca Sunzal, La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Nice hotel right on the beach in El Tunco. Clean rooms. Has a pool and great restaurant right on the beach. Prime location for surfing all the El Tunco breaks.

Eco del Mar Lodge in El Tunco

Eco de Mar, El Tunco, La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Quiet hotel one block from the beach in El Tunco. This is an eco-lodge. The staff were very friendly and nice, the food was good. Our room had a nice balcony with hammocks around. Good location!

Surfing at Punta Roca

punta roca surf spot

Grab a cab, or drive over to La Libertad - tell the driver you want to go to Punta Roca and they'll take you there! Great waves over a rocky bottom, so be careful. Follow the locals in and out. On good days there are a ton of guys taking pictures, they'll meet you at your hotel later in the day to show you.

Tour - Ruta de los Flores

Concepción de Ataco, Ahuachapán Department, El Salvador

Hire a private driver or arrange for a tour of the la ruta de los flores - this is a great way to explore more of the country. Along the route stop at the waterfalls, the town of Ataco, Lago de Coatepeque, coffee plantations, hot springs and restaurants!

Lago de Coatepeque

Lago de Coatepeque, Santa Ana Department, El Salvador

Beautiful lake! Arrange for a boat ride around the lake with a local through one of the restaurants/docks.

Beautiful Restaurant - El Jardin de Celeste

El Jardín de Celeste, Concepción de Ataco, Ahuachapán Department, El Salvador

MUST STOP HERE while on la ruta de los flores. Seriously breathtaking restaurant and views, great food. I cannot wait to go back here.

Soya NutriBar for Juices, Smoothie Bowls & Healthy Eat in El Tunco

Soya, El Tunco, La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Health food spot! (do you spot a trend in my itineraries?!)....
AND they have a massage therapist - perfect for post surf.

La Libertad

La Libertad, El Salvador

This is the town where Punta Roca is located. I would not stay here, but if you surf Punta Roca and want to stay for the day, there is enough to do. Cool pier with fish market, and restaurants along the beach.

Las Flores

Las Flores, El Salvador

A beach town further down south - about 2 hours from San Salvador Airport. Way quieter than El Tunco. Very nice! Hang out on the beach at La Tortuga Hotel/Restaurant. They have a ton of hammocks, good menu, surf boards for rent and a lot going on!

Hotel in Las Flores - Boca Olas

Boca Olas Resort & Villas, La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Decently nice hotel on the beach (remember, this is El Salvador ;) )
Nice pool, rooms were clean, breakfast was delicious!
