Morocco Adventure: Marrakech & Fes

My wife and I spent a week in Morocco, splitting time between Marrakech and Fes. Both were so fun and amazing in different ways! Truly an adventure we will never forget.

Hotel in Marrakech: Riad Lena

Riad Lena & Spa, Derb El Hammam, Marrakesh, Morocco

Marrakech's medina is filled with "riads," traditional Moroccan houses with an interior garden or courtyard. We stayed at Riad Lena. From the narrow street, all you see is a door, but when you walk through you're in a magical open air courtyard - so cool! It had the awesome rooftop, tiny little foot pool in the courtyard, and they served a great breakfast on the roof every morning

Hiking with Splash Morocco!

Marrakesh, Marrakesh-Tensift-El Haouz, Morocco

We did a day trip with Splash Morocco Adventure tours to go hiking in the Atlas mountains outside of Marrakech. The company is run by an awesome, fun Scottish guy named Andy. He was super friendly and even invited us out to beers that same night! They offer multiple other excursions (rafting, climbing, etc). If we went back, I would totally book more excursions with them

Dinner at Café Arabe

Cafe Árabe, Rue Mouassine, Marrakesh, Morocco

We had a great dinner at Café Arabe. We got drinks and dinner up on the rooftop there our first or second night, it was great. One of the owners was Italian so I remember there being some pasta on the menu too - which is odd for Morocco but it was delicious! The bar on the roof was really cool and a great place for pre-dinner drinks.

Lunch at Earth Cafe

Earth Café, Marrakesh, Morocco

Chill Vegetarian restaurant we discovered in the medina. It's off a side street past Jemaa el Fna, so it's a bit hidden, but really great food for super reasonable prices

Dinner at Le Marrakchi

Restaurant le Marrakchi, Rue des Banques, Marrakesh, Morocco

Nice, trendy restaurant off of Jemaa el Fna (the main square). Great local cuisine with a modern twist

Koutoubia Mosque

Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakesh, Morocco

Famous mosque and an iconic symbol of Marrakech, can be seen from all parts of the city

Drinks at Kosy Bar

Kosybar, Marrakesh, Morocco

We got wine on the rooftop of Kosy Bar, which was definitely the perfect place for drinks. This place was really cool and had three levels. The highest floor was completely outdoors and I think had views of the old palace walls (it was right by one of the palaces). On certain nights, has music and dancing

Beer & Trivia at Cafe du Livre!

Cafe du Livre, Marrakesh, Morocco

Our Scottish tour guide invited us here for beers after our hiking excursion. Clearly an expat bar. Surrounded by bookcases and the only place in all of Marrakech I saw beer on tap! We happened to be there on trivia night, which was a great time

Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle, Marrakesh, Morocco

Botanical garden in Marrakech, outside the medina. Designed by French artist Jacques Majorelle and (since the 80s) owned by Yves Saint-Laurent! Really nice place to spend a morning/afternoon.

Jemaa el-Fnaa

Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakesh, Morocco

The central square of Marrakech - you can't miss. In the morning, there are tons of vendors (try the fresh squeezed orange juice!), and at night, it's filled with musicians and entertainers. The square is surrounded by shops and restaurants.

Hotel in Fes: Riad Dar Guennoun

Riad Dar Guennoun, Fes, Morocco

The interior of this place was super cool and feels especially authentic Moroccan. The staff was super friendly and prepared us lunch when we arrived famished after a long train ride. Nice intimate rooftop to pop a bottle of wine at night.

Drinks at Mezzanine

Mezzanine, Avenue Moulay Hassan, Fes, Fes-Boulemane, Morocco

Lounge-y spot for drinks and had an amazing rooftop with torches

Drinks at Palais Jamai

Palais Jamaï, Fes, Morocco

A legit former palace overlooking the Fes Medina. The whole place is gorgeous. Also has a pool!

Dinner at Maison Blanche

Maison Blanche, Rue Ahmed Chaouki, Fes, Morocco

Now called "MB Fes." Upscale French Moroccan cuisine in the newer part of Fes. Classy ambience

Lunch at Café Clock

Café Clock, Fes, Morocco

Really cool place we got lunch at on one of our last days. Nice rooftop with good food. I remember wishing we had gone sooner – was definitely sort of a gathering place for backpackers (they hosted movie nights and other social things).

Bab Boujiloud (the "Blue Gate")

Bab Boujloud "The Blue Gate", Fes, Morocco

Cool site and a lively area in the medina. Lots of cafes around there
